Seriously, WTF!?!

I just found out if I mail-order my lovenox, instead of $250 a month it will be $20 a month. I feel like an idiot that I did not inquire sooner because this isn't a piddling few dollars difference here, but better sooner rather than later. I called MedCo and ordered and paid.

Thirty minutes later our phone rings. It's my FIL. Did you order some medication via mail order? He asks. Jack is speechless. Well, MedCo called saying they had some questions about your medication.

I am absolutely dumbfounded. I called MedCo in a state of fury. They don't even know I'm pregnant and you're calling them? How the hell did you get their number? They have no idea. Are they listed as your alternate contact. Um. Yeah, that happened. (NOT!)

I went up the insurance bureaucratic chain but no one can explain to me why associated with my claim number is my FIL's name, social security number and address. All I can imagine is that since we share the same last name they called him by accident.

They didn't ask Jack why we needed the medication but I'm assuming they'll ask when they arrive Thursday (gulp). Jack will likely tell them at some point we're pregnant but really didn't want to have to explain why I require buckets of meds to boot. Insurance is infuriating.

  1. That is one of the weirdest stories I've heard. Everything else aside, that creates such horrifying privacy issues that I can't believe a drug company would be unaware that they might be creating...
    Ugh.
But $20 is a whole lot better than $250!

  2. well, you don't have to tell them what kind of medication it was, for all they know it was birth control pills to regulate your cycle in preperation for ttc, many insurance companies require you to do mail oreder if you want more than a one month supply.

and i'm pretty sure that type of "accidental" phone call violates hipa laws.

  3. I'm so glad you found a way to get your lovenox cheaper, I'll have to look into that if get pregnant again.

And WTF??!??! I think I'd be asking for someones head on a silver platter delivered with all the lovenox you could ever need. That definitely violates privacy laws and they can get in serious trouble for it.

  4. omg how mortifying. You do NOT need this kind of stress right now. Glad you dodged the bullet, sort of, and good luck with their visit (and future orders). Why can't anything just be easy?!!?

  5. I can't believe that!! Bastard insurance companies! I think they owe you some FREE drugs for that mix up! That is confidential information they're throwing out there!

  6. OMG, you're KIDDING me!!! That is so wrong (and, at first blush, *illegal*!) on so many levels. I'd be seeing red if I were you. I'm so so sorry. Even though/if you planned on telling your inlaws, such an invasion of privacy and taking it out of control is horrible. ((Hugs))

  7. I really don't understand how stuff like this happens. I called to make a dermatologist appt for my husband and was told that he had to be the one to call to make the appt because of all the privacy laws. Seriously? But an insurance company can call your FIL instead of you? THAT'S an invasion of privacy!

  8. What a complete violation of your privacy!!! I would be absolutely pissed.

But HOORAY for cheaper meds! I keep pestering my DH to order his cholesterol meds via mail because it's less expensive. Still waiting on that one.
